"Most visitors enjoy trouble-free visits to Turkey. The Turkish authorities give a high priority to protecting visitors. However tensions increased following the arrest of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in February; and the PKK warned tourists against visiting Turkey. Ocalan was found guilty of treason by a Turkish Court on 29 June and given the mandatory death penalty. The decision will now go to appeal.
British nationals visiting Turkey are advised to take sensible precautions and to be aware of the dangers of visiting certain areas of the country. There have been a substantial number of terrorist incidents and public disturbances in Istanbul and sporadic attacks elsewhere in the country. Visitors could become caught up in any trouble. There have been no recent terrorist incidents in coastal resort areas. But these cannot be ruled out in present circumstances.
Visitors should stay only at hotels and guest houses that have been approved by the Ministry of Tourism. Ministry approved hotels and guest houses are available from $US20 upwards per night.
Street robbery is on the increase in the major Istanbul tourist areas. Stay alert and be wary of approaches by strangers. There have been instances of tourists being offered drink and food which is drugged.
Visitors should take particular care when travelling by road throughout Turkey. Serious traffic accidents frequently occur.
Visitors are strongly advised to obtain full travel insurance to cover illness, injury and loss of money, baggage and tickets.
There continues to be unrest in the Emergency Rule provinces in south-east Turkey of Van, Hakkari, Sirnak, Tunceli, Diyarbakir and Siirt. Travel to these and neighbouring provinces should be avoided. Those who must travel in south-east Turkey should keep to main roads and towns and avoid travel at dusk or after dark. They should also ensure that inoculations are up to date as contagious diseases are on the increase. They should also advise the Consular Section at the British Embassy, Ankara or British Consulate-General, Istanbul of their travel plans.
Due to continued insecurity in Northern Iraq do not attempt to enter Iraq from Turkey. The main border crossing points into Syria (in daylight hours) are still considered generally safe. Those considering the overland route to Iran should consult the Embassy in Ankara."
